It’s Okay Not to Know Everything Yet.

Choosing a major or a career path can feel like a massive decision. We want you to know: It’s okay not to have all the answers right now. College is your time for exploration. Focus on the journey of discovery, embracing the chance to learn more about your values, interests, and unique strengths. We are here to guide you every step of the way.

Focus on the Journey, Not Just the Destination

We encourage you to shift your focus from finding the “perfect job” to understanding who you are and what you enjoy doing.

A Major Isn’t a Career (It’s a Launchpad!)

While some majors have a clear career path (like Nursing), many majors (such as English, Psychology, or History) lead to a wide variety of exciting opportunities. Your degree, regardless of the subject, teaches you critical thinking, communication, problem-solving, and valuable industry knowledge. All majors are versatile and can be applied to a variety of career fields. We encourage you to explore various majors and minors and take classes that genuinely interest you and that apply broadly to understand your options.

Discover Who You Are

The best way to explore careers is by first exploring yourself. Start here:

  • Take a Self-Assessment: Career Services and Advising offers the STRONG Interest Inventory Assessment for free to any Fitchburg State Student. This online tool helps assess your interests, values, personality, and skills. It’s the perfect starting point for matching yourself to potential majors and careers.
  • Get Involved On Campus: Join clubs and organizations or attend events like the Major and Minor Fair. Extracurricular activities often reveal hidden interests, natural leadership abilities, and passions you didn’t know you had.
  • Explore Outside the Classroom: Explore local organizations and events or start volunteering. This is a fantastic, low-stakes way to explore different passions, test working environments, and give back to the community.

Seek Guidance

You don’t have to unpack your interests alone. We are your dedicated resource team:

  • Academic & Career Advisors: We help you decode your assessment results, research career paths, and understand the correlation between majors and the world of work.
  • Academic Advisors & Professors: They offer deep insight into your major and connect your coursework to real-world application.
  • Alumni Network: Talk to people who were once in your shoes! Informational interviews with alumni are a great way to see a career in action.
