If you’re ready to start applying to internships or jobs we’re here to help. No mater where you are in the process there are tools to assist you on the way.

Consider Your Timeline

When it comes to landing a job or internship, your “launch date” isn’t the day you start working; it’s months, or even a full year, before. While some industries hire “just-in-time” (hiring when they have a vacancy), many of the most competitive fields use structured recruiting cycles that reward the early bird. Generally you can anticipate the following timelines:

  • Large Corporations: Apply 8–12 months in advance.
  • Mid-sized/Small Businesses: Apply 3–6 months in advance.
  • Startups/Non-profits: Apply 1–3 months in advance.

Here are a few field-specific timelines to keep in mind

June – September (for the following summer)

These are the earliest. Top banks often finish recruiting for Summer 2026 by late Fall 2025.

August – December

Technical interviews (coding rounds) often happen shortly after applying, so be “interview-ready” by late summer.

September – January

Federal roles (like the State Dept. or FBI) require lengthy security clearances that can take 6+ months to process.

January – March

These fields tend to follow a “Spring cycle” for summer roles, once they have a better sense of their annual budgets.

February – April

These organizations often hire closer to the start date based on immediate grant funding or staffing needs.

Network

Networking is one of the most important tools in your search. You can start building your network and playing the “long game” of much earlier than when you would apply to posted positions. Through your contacts, you can find out about opportunities in the “hidden job market.”

  • Attend Fairs and Events: Career Services organizes fairs, panels, and roundtables. Community organizations like the North Central MA Chamber of Commerce also hold events.
  • LinkedIn: Use LinkedIn to identify potential contacts (supervisors, professors, classmates). Reach out to let them know you are looking.

Job & Internship Search Resources

  • Handshake: Fitchburg State’s #1 recommended platform. Connects you with thousands of employers. Activate your account with your Fitchburg Login.
  • CareerShift: A job-search and networking platform that allows you to find hidden contact information for recruiters, track applications, and search for job postings across thousands of websites in one centralized dashboard.
  • LinkedIn: In addition to networking, LinkedIn hosts a massive job board. Leverage connections to help land jobs.
  • Idealist: Lists jobs, internships, and volunteer opportunities specifically in the nonprofit sector.
  • Professional Orgs: Check with advisors for organizations in your field (e.g., AIGA for design). They often have specific job boards.

How to Read a Job Description

Reading descriptions carefully helps you decide if a role is a good fit and prepares you for the interview.

  • Job Title & Department: Tells you the focus of the role and where you fit in the organization.
  • Location: Look for Onsite, Hybrid, or Remote. Discussing specifics is best done later in the interview process.
  • Responsibilities: If you have experience with these tasks, highlight them in your cover letter!
  • Requirements: This is often a “wish list.” If you don’t meet every single requirement but feel you can do the job, apply anyway.

How to Apply

  • Read carefully: Take your time filling out online applications.
  • Customize: Make sure your documents are ready and customized to the position before you apply.
  • Proofread: Check for spelling and grammar errors before hitting submit.

Pro Tip: Upload your resume and cover letter as PDF documents titled with your name (e.g., First Name_Last Name_Resume.pdf).

Avoiding Job Scams

Be cautious! If something feels off, contact Career Services and Advising. Watch out for these red flags

  • Vague Descriptions: Be suspicious of roles with very short descriptions or lack of detail.
  • Too Good to Be True: Pay that is significantly higher than average or schedules that are “too flexible.”
  • Hasty Offers: Legitimate companies interview multiple candidates and don’t hire immediately without a process.
  • Requires Payment: No legitimate job will require you to pay them to work.
  • Personal Info: Do not give SSN or bank info before you have a formal offer.

Tips for Success

  • Use multiple sources; trial and error helps you find what works for your field.
  • Create profiles on job sites and use “Saved Search” features.
  • Schedule specific time in your calendar for job searching.
  • Follow up by phone or email about a week after you apply to check on the status of your application.
  • Get your resume reviewed by Career Services and Advising before applying!
